No fewer than 13 individuals perish and 98 injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” stated the national leader.

The official announced that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The building of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a notable growth of its duties in civilian works. They were completed at an accelerated speed, surpassing expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously fueled ongoing questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This halt was requested while awaiting a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the situation "calls for swift accountability."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and running of these vital projects.
