Pat Cummins has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.
Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's England-Australia contest.
Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.
Initial reports from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.
Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the prospects of participating.
"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations involved, aside from the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.
"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."
Past Concerns
He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.
There is a track record of back injuries, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss several home seasons in a short span.
Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the contest.
The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.
Contingency Plans
Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.
All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.
The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."
"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.
"He was only going to play the first two ODIs regardless. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
